Prof. Nicola Portinaro carries out several hours of teaching on the main orthopedic, primitive and secondary, affections, which can be congenital and be present from birth.

Theoretical teaching is followed by clinical practice where Prof Portinaro offers his experience in the outpatient and surgical field to the future doctors.

The specialization students attend the activities in the hospital unit and in the operating room with yearly shifts. In this way, they can develop high-level diagnostic and surgical skills.

The Degree Course in Neuro-Psychomotor Therapy of Developmental Medicine aims to train professionals and entitle them to carry out, independently and to a professional standard, activities aimed at prevention, functional assessment, care and rehabilitation related to problems of the developmental age.

The aim of the course lectured by Prof Portinaro is to learn to assess the neuro-orthopedic problems and to outline the overall pathophysiological and functional profile of the child in the different age groups and periods of development.

The course also teaches some principles of neuromotor rehabilitation in:

• neurological disorders

• acute and chronic diseases (both congenital and acquired) of the central and peripheral nervous system

• the main pediatric diseases.

Graduates in Orthopedic Techniques are healthcare professionals who “build”, on a medical prescription and following testing, prostheses, orthoses and orthotic braces and support solutions for the musculoskeletal system.

During this course, Prof Portinaro lectures on the main Paediatric Orthopedics and Traumatological diseases and on Neuro Orthopedics.

The aim of the course is to highlight some key points related to the ideation, choice of material, construction and implementation of orthopedic devices (prosthesis), that can improve or replace a neurologic deficit or abnormal function in a body area.

The obstetrician is the ultimate professional figure that is closest to the woman during her path to fertility and motherhood.
She is competent to follow the pregnancy and the puerperium, as well as support during childbirth.

The course, taught by Prof. Portinaro, consists of a few hours dedicated to examining how the musculoskeletal system of the woman goes through important biomechanical changes during pregnancy. These changes are aimed at allowing the fetus to grow and preparing the musculoskeletal system to childbirth.

The physiological changes that occur during pregnancy can become pathological. They often resolve after pregnancy, but it is important to diagnose and treat them promptly to avoid chronicity.

The objectives of the course are to give the notions to assess the different phases of pregnancy and identify any alterations. An important part of the course is also dedicated to the signs of distress in fetus and newborns, such as fetal distress, bone injuries during delivery and congenital malformations.

Graduates in nursing are healthcare professionals responsible for preventive, curative, palliative and rehabilitative nursing. They learn technical, relational and educational skills for the care of in-patients. Their main functions are disease prevention, assistance for patients and disabled people and health education.

During the course, Prof. Portinaro outlines the main orthopedic and traumatological diseases in adults and children. The objectives of the course are to provide the main notions for planning, managing and evaluating the nursing activities and care for orthopedics-traumatology patients.

Students will also learn how to identify patient’s and community’s health-care needs. And they will be prepared to integrate nursing care into a multidisciplinary care project.
